Hero: a lonely highschool kid who gets bullied. He finally gets a girlfriend Villian: Rich trust fund guy who owns a fortune 500 company and wants to kill the boy's girlfriend in order to achieve immortality, and god like power. Basically, the antichrist is the antagonist in this religious fiction book.

By "can't put it down" does that mean he has to carry the gun in his hand? This would make it hard to get into the post office unobserved. The story idea got me thinking about who I could kill and get away with it. Also, how would I drive with a gun in my hand cause uber is not an option if you're armed.

Season 1 of Westworld is a really interesting example of this, because it intentionally obfuscates that there are multiple timelines at play, and how many there are. It works really well thematically because the 'hosts' are basically video game NPCs and don't really experience a progression in time, so we the audience don't easily get to understand the progression in time until everything comes together late in the story. No comment on the remaining seasons of this show. Season 1 is brilliant as a stand-alone piece.

So, caveat, I am a huge Hitch fan so keep that in mind, BUT. I think the Hitch “misunderstanding” actually works here given how the writers use this misunderstanding in the future. The two of them get back together after ultimately finding out that he didn’t work with the jerk, and genuinely wants to help his clients. The misunderstanding was because of his illusive reputation he built and how he tries to keep his identity secret, and Hitch’s girlfriend’s loss of temper because of her defensiveness towards her friend who got screwed. That’s why it couldn’t be prevented, it was a heat of the moment because she was defending her friend. Later on in the movie Hitch literally uses the line “you need to get your facts straight”, which is a bullet point in why you don’t like miscommunication. I agree that misunderstandings are lazy, but this ultimately does come back around that seemed to be thought through and was actually used as a plot device, rather than being lazy and contrived. Just out here trying to defend Hitch, is all.

I know this is slightly outside the box here, but NPC dialogue in video games always fucking sends me. I know, I know, it's not screen or stage acting, or written, but it always cracks me up because it's so often utterly divorced from reality. For example, I'm currently playing Starfield. I can burst into a room, mow down 10 people, throw handfuls of grenades into the next room, turn invisible, snipe the leader with one shot, then pull out a minigun and the ONE survivor somehow always says some version of "You'll never get away from ME! Stop running, coward!!!" I'm just like, "My dude, I just swept through your compound like the avenging Angel of Death and literally just blew your leaders head off. I'm not sure that confidence is warranted." And yes, I know some games have better dialogue than others, and some have mechanics where NPCs will run away. I'm speaking in a general sense here.

I don't think I agree with you on the Training Day twist. Yeah, it's long odds, no doubt. Would that ever happen in real life? Not a chance. But it's a message about how the rookie wanted to do things his way and it turned out to be the better way. He got some positive karma because he, at his core, is a good person who wants to do good things. No, it's not the most logical step ever, but it effectively showed that A) He can do the job without being corrupt and B) He was in way over his head but was saved by his own goodness. He does save himself, as the protagonist should. He just didn't do it by beating up or shooting the guy with the gun to his head. He did it by being a good person who cares about others. I think Training Day deserves more respect than this, personally.

I take issue with calling things plot holes when they’re unrelated to the plot, I mean, unless the plot somehow revolves around the number of bullets in a given gun, like Dirty Harry’s, its not a plot hole. Also, in Armageddon, they have astronauts AND drillers. Its not like the well drillers are flying the space shuttles. The most egregious thing about that movie is the abandonment of basically every law of physics

The absolute worst plot hole in a great movie is probably in Your Name (Kimino Nawa) where the twist is the two characters who were exchanging bodies weren't only separated by space, but also time, like 3 or so years. Why did neither of them see the date? Or anything that would indicate they were 3 years before/ahead of their time. Makes the whole movie unwatchable imo.

I know that this isn't an action cliché, but I just hate it whenever characters are in a dire/urgent situation and one of the characters suggests something, and then proceed to say that they're 100% in the right about this. Like I just get up and walk away every time this happens, and I hate it.

One gohst story I'm fixated on is Ghost Watch. It was a one off made for TV film by the BBC. It is filmed like you're watching a live documentary being filmed at a TV studio and a haunted house. The Ghost of the film is called (mr) Pipes. And he act like a tipical poltergeist at first. Aspiring in the shadows or in a room for a second. But his powers and story is gradually told and ar revealed old by the time its too late.

Characters with opposing values are what makes a good vs evil story great. It's not just a bad guy being typically bad and a good guy being typically (or predictably) good in black and white terms. It's that they have completely different world views and ideas on what is good and bad about the world and people. In Batman Begins, Bruce Wayne and Ra's al Ghul have two different ideas on how to deal with crime in Gotham City. Bruce believes Gotham isn't beyond saving but Ra's thinks it is. It's like in Training Day. Jake and Alonzo have different views on how to deal with crime in their city. Alonzo has been corrupted by his experiences but likes to justify his thoughts and actions by believing he's doing what is best for his community. He obviously isn't but likes to believe it. Jake is pure and wants to go by the book and do his job with integrity. Things like this are way more compelling if written the right way. Batman, the Joker and Harvey Dent all see the world and themselves differently in The Dark Knight. They were all written so well.

I'm not a writer, but from my understanding, you can play with both sides of the dialogue, if you know them.

Speaking of your first point, and the Walking Dead, one of the reasons I like the World War Z NOVEL (not the movie, never the movie) is because of how it portrays this. It goes in depth about how all the Western militaries had been trained in Shock/Awe doctrine, how they'd been prepared for a shooting war with another country, and how the soldiers had been trained to aim for the chest for disabling wounds (and the torso is a much easier target). This meant that there was no time to retrain them properly to shoot at the head for the zombies, and they got rolled in the first years of the outbreak.
